The Collector: Venezuela to Rhode Island by Associated Estate & Appraisal

Auction Description

The Collector: Venezuela to Rhode Island auction centers around a stunning
collection of 19 prints by John James Audubon. Each of these beautiful hand-colored aquatint engravings from the 1820s and 30s are from Audubon's legendary series, The Birds of America, which remains one of the most important and valuable ornithological works in the world. Audubon’s prints offer a vivid portrayal of North America's avian life and are revered for their meticulous detail, scientific accuracy, and breathtaking beauty.

This impressive collection of Audubon prints was inherited from Mr. E. H. Vare, Jr., a major Philadelphia collector. Mr. Vare donated five original copper plates commissioned by Audubon for the famous Double Elephant folio to Yale University and donated a very rare copy of the Double Elephant folio to the University of Pennsylvania in the 1950s.

In addition to the Audubon prints, the auction also features an oil on canvas still life by celebrated Vietnamese-French artist, Le Pho (1907-2001). Le Pho’s still lifes are known for their harmonious blend of serenity and vibrancy, capturing a unique fusion of Vietnamese and French styles. Also up for auction is a charcoal on paper sketch by Venezuelan artist Armando Reverón (1889-1954) titled Pareja a Caballo (Couple on Horseback). The piece was acquired by Dr. Carl Gustav Kalen, Consul General of Sweden, from Galeria Acquavella, Caracas, Venezuela in 1968 and thence by family descent.

The auction also includes a variety of sterling silver pieces, dinnerware, and fine jewelry including a set of four Graff Washbourne & Dunn sterling silver candlesticks, an 87-piece Royal Copenhagen porcelain 'Flora Danica' part dinner service, and a Paulding Farnham for Tiffany & Co. enamel brooch.
