Dressing/vanity case, finely constructed from rich rosewood with brass fittings, the interior lined with royal blue velvet, with fitted compartments holding original gilt mounted crystal containers and grooming implements. Retailed by Ortner and Houle, 3 St. James SW, London. Gilt mountings hallmarked: Frederic Purnell, London, Sterling, 1869 and duty mark.
The upper section of the case houses these tools, while a pull-out drawer in the lower part offers additional jewelry storage, also lined with matching velvet. There is also a side, spring activated, pop-out drawer. This type of case, often referred to as a gentleman's or lady's vanity case, was highly popular during the Victorian era.
