Item Identification: Historical Print Artist/Maker Identification: Unknown Medium Identification: Engraving or lithograph on paper Detailed description with rich history: This framed print appears to be a 19th-century historical scene depicting George Washington and other notable figures of the American Revolutionary period. The image shows Washington and another gentleman in period dress standing on the porch of what seems to be Mount Vernon. In the foreground, women and children are seated, with dogs playing nearby. The scene is set against a backdrop of trees and pastoral landscape, typical of the romanticized views of early America popular in the 19th century. Such prints were often produced to commemorate important historical figures and events, and to foster a sense of national identity in the young United States. They were commonly found in American homes and public buildings throughout the 19th and early 20th centuries, serving both decorative and educational purposes.
Dimensions: Approximately 36 inches wide by 28 inches high (including frame)
Confidence Variables:
The print appears to be in fair to good condition, considering its likely age. The image itself shows some discoloration and fading, which is common for prints of this era. There are visible signs of foxing (brown spotting) on the paper, particularly noticeable in the lighter areas of the print. The matting around the image shows signs of age-related discoloration. The frame, which appears to be gilded wood, shows some wear and minor losses to the finish, particularly at the corners and edges. There is visible dust and grime on the glass and frame, suggesting the piece may benefit from careful cleaning. Overall, while showing its age, the print remains a presentable example of 19th-century historical imagery.
